Vivian van der Kuil has been a lawyer since 2012. She joined THNa in 2023, as a partner in maritime and transport law. She has extensive experience with handling complicated maritime accidents, including the “Baltic Ace”, “Delfborg” and “Evergiven” cases. Her particular focus is on attachments and limiting liability. She advises and counsels clients about buying, selling and building vessels and maritime projects for the offshore sector. She also frequently litigates maritime and logistics disputes.
Vivian specialises in maritime liability, insurance law and contracts, and in EU and IMO regulations and Law of the Sea (LOS). One of her particular areas of focus is ship classification and the role of classification societies. She frequently serves as an arbitrator and is a deputy judge at the Court of Appeal in Arnhem-Leeuwarden. She lectures in Private Law at the professional training programme for lawyers.
Before becoming a lawyer, Vivian served as a naval officer in the Royal Netherlands Navy (1994-2005), followed by a period as a judicial officer in training, public prosecutor and judge (2005-2012). She obtained an LLM in Public International Law from Utrecht University in 2003.
Vivian van der Kuil chairs THNa’s Port Market Group. This multidisciplinary team offers practical solutions to legal matters where different areas of the law overlap, e.g. administrative law, company law, employment law and maritime law.
